THE SUPPLIER

Faced with a decline in traditional farming, some rural, small-scale farmers in Norfolk, England, turned their attention to camomile production. Our trade with Norfolk Essential Oils ensures this co-operative of family farmers is helping to revitalise a rural community.

THE COMMUNITY

Our Camomile oil and water come from a collection of nine family farms in East Anglia, England. Pressurised steam is passed through the harvested camomile flowers to release the essential, calm-inducing oils.

THE PROCESS

Our high quality Community Trade camomile essential oil is steam-distilled from fresh cut flowers from the fields of Norfolk, England, by our Community Trade expert distiller, Norfolk Essential Oils. The flowers are steam-distilled to release the essential oil. The vapour is cooled and separated into camomile oil and water. We use both, as camomile water is perfect for lighter products.

KEN GOODGER'S STORY

Ken and his family have a farm that is part of NEO. His wife, son and daughter have been involved over the years and both children are pursuing careers in the agricultural industry. Ken’s son has also been awarded tenancy of a 200-acre farm by Cambridgeshire County Council.

BABY BLUE CAMOMILE

The Camomile flower’s essential oil is a pale blue colour. The aroma has been likened to ‘apples and straw’. In fact, Camomile gets its name from the Greek for ‘ground apple’.

A LITTLE HELP FROM NEO

The 1990s was difficult for British farmers due to larger industrial-style agribusinesses. Forming the co-operative NEO allowed farmers to diversify their income by entering the cosmetics market.
