Plant a Seed for Life

Plant a Seed

the body shop is dedicated to help protect the earth’s varied biodiversity to help preserve and enrich life on our planet.

When you choose Oils of LifeTM skincare, you help us to plant seeds and make a positive difference.

In partnership with World Land Trust we aim to plant 1 million seeds of native tree species in degraded areas within seasonal dry forest in the Cerro Blanco Protected Forest. The planting will be followed by monitoring and maintainence actions to promote regeneration of forest cover.

The project will take place over a two-year period and commenced in August 2015. Seed will be collected for storage and preserved for planting, and later in the year the plantation site will be prepared for sowing.

The first sowing will take place during early 2016 to coincide with the rains. During April to June seeds will be cleaned and weeds removed from the first season’s germinated seedlings. Then through July to December, a further collection of seeds will take place.

At the start of 2017 the second period of sowing will take place and will replace any losses from the first season. During this time, weeds will be removed from the germinated seedlings from the second season.

After this period, World Land Trust will watch over the forest for a ten-year period, periodically inspecting and measuring trees at years three, five and ten.

In addition the seedlings will be weeded regularly by local partner Pro-Bosque until they can be left to grow on their own. As the seeds are a mix of different species, they will be free to grow at different speeds, so some fast growing will be free to grow in tree yeas, while others will need care and attention for five years.

The Body Shop will be funding this project from the profits of its launch og the Oils of LiveTM skincare range.

We will divert 10 pence from the sale of each product in the range to the seed project. We estimate that this will fund the seed project after three months of sales following the launch of Oils of LifeTM skincare range.

The Cerro Blanco Reserve covers some 6,078 ha on the slopes of the coastal Cordillera Chongon Colonche in south west Ecuador.

The reserve is owned and managed by World Land Trust project partner, Foundación Pro-Bosque, an Ecuadorian non-profit, conservation organisation.

Despite being so close to the bustling city of Guayaquil, the Cerro Blanco Reserve is one of the best remaining examples of biodiversity-rich seasonally dry forest in the region of south-west Ecuador.

Those working on the reforestation on Cerro Blanco come from the local community and have strong engagement with local schools.
