WHAT IS PLANT STEM CELL TECHNOLOGY?
Primary plant stem cells are only found in the growth tips of the plant i.e. the roots and buds. Plant stem technology is based on the fact that all plant cells, under certain conditions, can reactivate its ‘stem cell like’ properties to generate new plant tissue. This process is the plants natural ‘protective’ mechanism.
When a plant is wounded the plant induces the formation of new tissue, called a callus, which contains ‘stem like cells’, to renew and regenerate the plant tissue. This natural process is then recreated in the lab to produce the plant stem cells extracts.
The advantage of stem cell technology is that it allows access to plant stem cells without the need to harvest the plants from the wild or from crops. The method also ensures a standardised composition, meaning that there is very little variation between batches, maintaining potency.
