Our partnership began when our founder, Anita Roddick, met the incredible women crafting shea butter and learned about its
moisturising properties on a 1992 visit to northern Ghana.
Throughout our 30-year partnership with the Tungteiya Women’s Association, we’ve not only paid a fair price for handcrafted shea butter but also a premium that has helped:

The Process
Six hundred and forty women from 11 villages handcraft 390 tons of shea butter for our products each year, using traditional, handmade techniques to ensure the highest quality.
The shea butter process has been passed from mother to daughter for generations. It involves 18 stages from gathering shea fruit and removing the nut, to boiling, drying, cracking, filtering, crushing, roasting, kneading the paste, boiling again to reveal the golden liquid, kneading again and cooling.
